If you have fibromyalgia pain, hang in there – pain relief is possible.

Today, doctors have treated more insight into fibromyalgia, and with many types of medications to their symptoms. Antidepressants, anticonvulsants, narcolepsy drugs, pain killers, sleeping pills – when used for treating fibromyalgia symptoms change, these drugs, the chemistry of the brain to reduce pain, improve sleep, and ease anxiety or depression.

Work to help better for patients with fibromyalgia is the ultimate goal for treatment, said Kim Jones, PhD, president of the Fibromyalgia Information Foundation and associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing and Medicine in Portland.

“That’s the key with fibromyalgia,” she says WebMD “to do what we can do to reduce the symptoms, so patients can maintain employment, so that they can be involved with family and community.”

Treatment usually includes fibromyalgia medications and aerobics – swimming or running – it is important shows in the control of fibromyalgia pain, the research, says Doris Cope, MD, director of the Pain Management at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Everyone wants a magic pill,” Cope WebMD, “but a pill can not do everything.”

The symptom-by-symptom approach to the treatment of fibromyalgia

In working with a patient, Jones targets the person two or three worst symptoms of fibromyalgia. Common symptoms of Fibromyalgia include deep muscle pain, fatigue, morning stiffness, headaches, insomnia, constipation or diarrhea, memory problems and anxiety or depression. But not all people with fibromyalgia suffer from the same symptoms.

She looks at the symptoms are among the greatest toll on human life. Then, the patient and try different drugs until they find one – or a combination – that works.

“It’s a bit of trial and error while trying to land a good treatment,” says Jones. Not every patient is well on one particular drug. It is difficult to know what medication you should try first. But working as a team during this phase of trial and error is often an effective strategy.

Fibromyalgia pain treatment options

If the pain is the primary symptom of fibromyalgia, Jones may prescribe a prescription painkiller, an anticonvulsant, or an antidepressant.

Anticonvulsants developed to treat seizures, alleviate many types of pain. Lyrica, an anticonvulsant, was the first drug approved by FDA specifically for fibromyalgia pain.

Two other antiseizure drugs are studied as fibromyalgia medications – Neurontin and Ativan.

Antidepressants are very useful improvement in relieving pain and fibromyalgia deep restful sleep. They work by balancing serotonin and other chemicals in the brain are involved in pain processing.

The new selective SNRIs alleviate (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), fibromyalgia pain, whether the patient is depressed or not. SNRIs are Cymbalta and Effexor. Cymbalta is the only antidepressant approved by the FDA to treat fibromyalgia pain. Effexor is also to relieve pain in fibromyalgia. The FDA has approved the SNRI Savella used fibromyalgia. A caveat for SNRIs: These drugs can not be used if the patient is a type of drug called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or have narrow-angle glaucoma.

Research shows that SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like Paxil and Zoloft can help with sleep, general well-being and pain relief – with less impact on the fatigue and tender points in fibromyalgia. However, research indicates that SSRIs are not as effective as the SNRIs in the treatment of fibromyalgia.

Amitril, Elavil, and other tricyclic antidepressants are often used for fibromyalgia medications, but many people do not like the side effects (weight gain, dizziness, fatigue). At low doses, these drugs do not help, mood or anxiety disorders, fibromyalgia patients often have. However, this type of antidepressant to help with sleep.

Combination antidepressants: At times, a combination of antidepressants may contribute to muscle pain, anxiety and depression in fibryomyalgia. The patients are also more restful sleep, feel less tired and have a better overall feeling of well being.

Painkillers like Ultram and tramadol can help break cycles to relieve pain from fibromyalgia flare-up pain and reduce muscle spasms. The muscle relaxant Flexeril can help improve pain and sleep. Local injections of analgesics and / or cortisone for painful trigger points can be particularly effective in breaking cycles of pain and muscle spasms.

Treatment of Insomnia From Fibromyalgia

Insomnia is a major problem in people with fibromyalgia. Research shows that frequent sleep disturbances to prevent the growth hormones – an important restorative hormone – from being produced by the body. Without growth hormone, muscles do not heal completely and neurotransmitters (like serotonin) are not padded.

Without deep sleep, the body can not recover from the stresses day. This can overwhelm the body’s systems, resulting in a great sensitivity to pain.

In some patients with fibromyalgia, there is an underlying cause of insomnia, such as restless legs syndrome or sleep apnea. If it is not clear what the cause of sleep problems, Jones prescribe one of several medications to help with sleep.

Low-dose tricyclic antidepressants (such Amitril) can help with sleep.
A prescription sleeping pills like Ambien, Lunesta, Rozerem and Sonata is not addictive in small doses. These are called “short-acting” drugs because they remain active in the body for the shortest time. Each of these drugs works a little differently. Some help people fall asleep faster, sleep through the other place sure.

The anticonvulsant Lyrica is also prescribed to treat other symptoms of fibromyalgia such as insomnia and fatigue.
In small studies, the narcolepsy drug Xyrem has been reported to help both sleep and pain. Xyrem, a highly effective drug for the treatment of narcolepsy and help with daytime sleepiness is helping patients with fibromyalgia to the deep sleep they need.
Cope keeps his sleep aids at the last resort. “We can sleep medicines with you, but we must be careful,” she tells WebMD. “We do not want to take over the body’s ability to produce neurochemicals – or it will stop producing them. “

Do not forget, lifestyle approaches for treating fibromyalgia pain

Chronic pain is hard to beat, so you need every bit of help you can get.

Exercise strengthens the body’s production of serotonin (the mood-boosting brain chemical). It also improves blood flow to muscles, releases stress and tightness, improves sleep, helps alleviate any pain, Cope WebMD.

Other lifestyle approaches to help with fibromyalgia. “Stress reduction, relaxation techniques, prayer, yoga, imagery – can help too,” says Cope. “Try different things. Find what works for you. These things make the difference. “

But complete relief from fibromyalgia pain is not always possible to Cope known. “If your pain is moderate but you’re a normal life, going to work, we have made progress.”

I wish more people would write blogs like this that are really fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is rare to read a blog like this instead.
